Community honors fallen Edgewater officer at candlelight vigil

Officer David Jewell killed at Ormond-By-The-Sea gas station

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Hundreds of people gathered in Volusia County on Friday evening to honor Edgewater Police Officer David Jewell, who investigators say was fatally shot while off duty earlier this week at a gas station in Ormond-by-the-Sea.

Family members, fellow law enforcement officers and community members held candles, placed flowers on Jewell’s patrol car and listened as bagpipes played during an emotional vigil. Jewell, 45, was remembered as a devoted father and public servant.

“I want to take a moment to introduce someone very special to all of us. It’s David’s son, Bobby,” one speaker said, adding that the teen is committed to carrying on his father’s legacy.

The vigil drew support not only from Jewell’s immediate community but also from others who have endured similar tragedies. Peggy Raynor, whose son, Daytona Beach Police Officer Jason Raynor, died in 2021 after being shot in the line of duty, said she makes it a priority to comfort grieving families.

“The way he died rings true, because my son was also shot in the head and suffered for many days before he succumbed to the injuries,” Raynor said. “It’s like people come out of the woodwork … and I’m sure they’re going through the same thing.”

Parents in attendance said they brought their children to show the importance of respect for fallen officers.

“It’s very important to show your respect when somebody’s very important, like this officer tonight that passed away,” one community member said. “Just letting them see how it is in the real world.”

Edgewater Mayor Diezel Depew said the turnout was a reflection of the community’s deep respect for Jewell and law enforcement across Florida.

“Edgewater community always comes together, unfortunately, during times of tragedy or happiness,” Depew said. “David was a wonderful individual in the community. Law enforcement from all over the state of Florida came to honor his legacy.”

Authorities continue to investigate Jewell’s killing.
