Weekend tropical downpours have Brevard County residents feeling anxious

Flood watch in effect in Volusia, Brevard counties

MIMS, Fla. – With rain, wind, and possibly dangerous beach conditions expected throughout the weekend, a flood watch remains in effect in Volusia and Brevard counties until Sunday.

Audrey Schmidt, who lives at the Patio Motel in Brevard County, says over the past few years she has dealt with flooding and the possibility of going through it again has her heart sinking.

“Very concerned. I’ve got anxiety and my anxiety picked up,” she said.

Although Schmidt feels a bit more prepared this weekend than in years past, she still doesn’t want it to be bad.

“Well, I say we’re ready for it, but I don’t know how bad it’s going to be. The last time we had one, it flooded and we could not get out of the house. And I have a disabled person that I take care of,” said Schmidt.

Daxenzie Decker, who is in the same neighborhood as Schmidt, says she will be staying alert when it comes to the expected weekend weather.

“If it’s completely flooded in, I just need to make sure I have my resources beforehand, canned goods and simple things to eat,” said Decker.

Schmidt also says she will be stocking up on what she can get, but when it comes to picking up and moving, that’s not as simple.

“I have nowhere else to go. I can’t afford anything else higher than what I’m paying now,” said Schmidt.

She is hoping Mother Nature won’t sweep away her life’s belongings this weekend.

“I mean, I have everything in here. This is my home and I do not want to lose it again,” said Schmidt.

She and others are hoping the bad weather bypasses them and they don’t have to deal with floodwaters again.
