Man arrested, 3 sought in ‘ambush’ shooting that killed 15-year-old girl in Brevard County

Jonterich Smith, 20, faces charges of first-degree murder

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – One suspect was arrested, another is on the run and two others are sought for questioning in a shooting that killed a 15-year-old girl and injured two others earlier this month in Brevard County, according to Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

Karyah Duncan, of Cocoa, was found on Oct. 6 shot outside of Anchors Seafood and Chicken restaurant on Clearlake Road and taken to the hospital, where she later died. She was one of three people who were shot, deputies said.

After the shooting, Ivey described the incident as an “ambush” and an “extremely isolated incident.”

In a social media post on Monday, Ivey said that 20-year-old Jonterich Smith, who had an active warrant for the shooting, was arrested after a traffic stop in Volusia County,

“This individual is a monster. This was an ambush," Ivey said about Smith’s arrest.

Smith faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. He is being held in the Brevard County jail on no bond.

According to an affidavit for arrest warrant, one of the shooting victims recognized Smith.

Ivey said they also have an active warrant and are looking for 20-year-old Xazavier Butler, who will face the same charges in the shooting.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday said it is also looking for two others.

“The Homicide Unit is continuing the investigations into these two subjects and their involvement,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Anyone with information about the shooting can report anonymously to Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).

A GoFundMe set up to go towards funeral expenses and household needs described Duncan as someone “full of promise, compassion, and joy.” To donate, click here.
