Nearly head-on crash kills Florida man in Sumter County

Driver identified as 42-year-old Palm Harbor man

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A near-head-on crash in Sumter County on Thursday morning left one man dead, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

In a release, troopers said the crash happened along SR-471 when a Nissan Rogue — which was driving north — got into the southbound lane to pass traffic near Main Line Road.

However, a Volkswagen sedan was heading southbound at the same time, leading to a nearly head-on collision between the two vehicles, troopers added.

As a result, the Volkswagen driver was killed at the scene, the release shows.

Troopers identified the Nissan driver as a 32-year-old Lakeland man. Meanwhile, the Volkswagen driver was identified as a 42-year-old Palm Harbor man.

No additional information has been provided at this time, including the Nissan driver’s condition or whether any arrests will stem from the fatal crash.
