BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Two men, including one who remains at-large, have been indicted for murder in the October “ambush” shooting outside a Cocoa restaurant that killed a 15-year-old girl and injured two others.

The state attorney’s office on Wednesday said Jonterich Smith, 20, and Xazavier E. Butler, 20, were charged with first-degree murder with a firearm in the death of Karyah Duncan, who was shot outside of Anchors Seafood and Chicken restaurant on Clearlake Road. Duncan was one of three people shot.

Smith was arrested days after the shooting, while Butler remains on the run.

The two suspects were also charged with attempted first-degree murder while inflicting bodily harm for the two other victims, 18-year-old men, who were injured in the shooting.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey described the shooting as an “ambush” and that it was an “extremely isolated incident.”

The sheriff’s office said the three victims were in a vehicle in the parking lot of the restaurant when a dark colored SUV pulled behind them, blocking their exit.

Multiple people exited the SUV and began shooting toward the vehicle and the occupants who were attempting to exit it, officials said.

The assailants - Smith, Butler and a third unidentified person - then got back into the SUV and left the area prior to the arrival of deputies, officials said. The SUV has since been recovered.
