BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A 23-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend last month in Port St. John was indicted on a first-degree murder charge.

A grand jury on Wednesday formally charged Tyjah Bellinger in the Nov. 16 shooting death of Lendzi Lakeman, 28.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to the 7000 block of Carlow Ave. for reports of shots fired.

According to the state attorney’s office, a 911 caller reported hearing three gunshots and later saw Bellinger fire more shots into the home’s open garage before driving off in a Kia.

Lakeman was found with multiple gunshot wounds and later pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.

Bellinger was later located at a family member’s home in Port St. John, where he was taken into custody.

The state attorney’s office said Bellinger told a relative he had the firearm, tripped and the gun went off once. Prosecutors said Bellinger fired an AR-style pistol 12 times.

Bellinger is being held without bond at the Brevard County jail.
