ORLANDO, Fla. – A trial date was determined on Wednesday for a man accused of killing two people and injuring several others in a 2024 mass shooting in downtown Orlando.

Jury selection for Jaylen Edgar‘s trial is set to begin on Jan. 8.

Edgar, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, faces charges including murder and attempted murder after police say he fired into a crowd of thousands celebrating Halloween, injuring nine people and killing two. The shooting caused panic and chaos, with one woman trampled as people fled the scene.

Video released by Orlando police shows a man in a yellow shirt, identified as Edgar, looking back, raising his arm, and shooting while walking on Orange Avenue near Central Boulevard.

Court documents reveal that after killing one person, Edgar moved east on Central, then north on Court Avenue, passing by businesses, partygoers, and officers before firing again near Washington Street, where another person was killed, and seven more were shot.

Police recovered the firearm from Edgar’s right pant leg after he was handcuffed on the ground.

In an interview at police headquarters, Edgar told detectives he had been under significant stress due to witnessing numerous deaths of loved ones. He said he came downtown with a friend, met others, and claimed he found the gun earlier that day at another location.

Two people were killed in the shooting: 19-year-old University of Central Florida freshman Timothy Schmidt Jr., and 25-year-old Tyrek Hill.

Earlier this year, families of the victims killed filed negligence lawsuits against the city and Wall Street Plaza’s operator, claiming failures in security, training, and safety measures, and seeking answers about how the violence was allowed to occur.

Edgar remains held without bond and was charged as an adult.
