SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A man and a woman died after being struck in a golf cart at an intersection near The Villages late Friday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 109 and U.S. 27 in Sumter County, troopers said.

According to a statement from FHP, the golf cart was being driven by a 64-year-old Lady Lake man with a 58-year-old woman from The Villages riding as a passenger.

The golf cart was traveling westbound on C.R. 109 when its driver failed to stop for a red traffic signal at the intersection, causing it to enter the direct path of a Kia Soul that was being driven southbound on U.S. 27, the statement reads.

The Kia struck the golf cart and caused it to overturn, troopers said, adding the man and the woman who were inside of the golf cart later died at a hospital.

The 23-year-old Eustis woman who was driving the Kia was hospitalized for treatment of minor injuries, as was a 1-year-old Leesburg boy who was with her during the crash, according to FHP.
