BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A woman arrested in a 2022 fatal hit-and-run crash that threw a bicyclist into the Indian River in Brevard County was sentenced to nine years in jail.

Anabel Morales pleaded no contest on Friday to leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death. Morales was arrested months after the June 2022 crash that killed 56-year-old Stephan Morf.

According to a crash report, Morf was struck by a vehicle and fell off the State Road 520 causeway and into the Indian River, an estimated 30- to 50-foot drop.

Surveillance video recorded at a 7-Eleven minutes before the crash show Morf heading toward the causeway on his way home to Cocoa.

“I couldn’t believe it,” a 7-Eleven employee told News 6. “He’d even tip us bagging his groceries.”

Troopers said Morf was later recovered by the U.S. Coast Guard and pronounced dead at the scene.

Morales previously pleaded not guilty before changing her plea to no contest.
