FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Work on Flagler Beach’s replacement pier is underway, with crews moving toward a construction milestone.

Flagler Beach City Manager Dale Martin told News 6 that required crane maintenance slowed down work this week, but crews are wrapping up work on the temporary trestle used to reach and dismantle the old structure.

“We had an informal FDEP (Florida Department of Environmental Protection) site visit this week, and the agency was overall pleased with what they saw,” said Martin.

Crews were also able to remove several sections of the old pier last week.

Looking ahead, Martin said that — weather permitting — the project is less than two weeks from driving its first concrete test pile, with dimensions of the first three test piles being sent to the precast plant in Jacksonville.

“We’re looking to drive 70- and 100-foot-long test piles that will help with determining the size of actual production piles within the first few bents of the new pier.”

The nearly century-old wooden pier, first built in 1928, was severely damaged by Hurricane Ian in 2022, which tore away much of its seaward end and forced its closure, accelerating long-planned replacement with a concrete structure designed to better withstand major storms.
