‘Long overdue’: New Ocoee traffic light planned to ease congestion, improve safety

Light being installed at intersection of Fountains West Boulevard, West Road

OCOEE, Fla. – For years, some drivers in Ocoee have advocated for a light at what they say is an over congested and crash-prone intersection. Now, they’re breathing a sigh of relief as a long-awaited traffic light is finally being installed at the intersection of Fountains West Boulevard and West Road.

Residents said the intersection has been a problem spot for years, with frequent backups and multiple collisions. According to MetroPlan data, from 2018 to 2024 there have been several serious injury crashes in the area, highlighted by clusters of reported collisions along the roadway.

With a line of cars often seen at the busy crossing, Ocoee resident Kellie Beck said she has spent the last three years advocating for a traffic signal. She is hopeful the change will make a noticeable difference.

“We are really hoping to see an improvement in traffic for the community and safety,” Beck said.

Beck points to rapid development near the intersection as a factor contributing to congestion and accidents.

“Housing Developments are back here, plus the school and shopping center—we see accidents all the time,” she said.

Beck says navigating the intersection can be confusing and dangerous sometimes with vehicles stopping in the middle of the roadway while others attempt to turn onto or off West Road.

In a statement, Ocoee District 1 Commissioner Scott R. Kennedy called the new traffic signal is something the city has worked on together:

“The new traffic signal at West Road and Fountains West Boulevard is both necessary and long overdue. District 1 has experienced significant growth over the past two decades, and this signal is one of many transportation and infrastructure needs created by that growth.

This location has become a congestion and safety concern, particularly during peak traffic hours. The signal is anticipated to be operational by June, and we are excited to see it completed.

Our City Manager and his team have played an important role in working with Orange County and various agencies to address traffic, safety, and congestion throughout the City of Ocoee.”

For Beck she said the goal is simple: Fewer crashes and smoother traffic flow.

“Seeing fewer accidents, seeing a really great improvement in the smoothness of the congestion—especially around school dismissal time,” Beck said.

For now, plastic coverings remain where the traffic lights will soon be operational.

While it may still be months, Beck said she is grateful the city is taking steps to address a long-standing problem.
