11-year-old boy shot in Brevard County, sheriff’s office says

Investigators believe bullet was ‘intended for persons he was with’

MIMS, Fla. – An 11-year-old boy was shot Friday in Mims, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

A sheriff’s office spokesperson told News 6 that the boy was hurt around 4 p.m. when he was “more than likely hit by a round that was intended for persons he was with,” based on information thus far.

The boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, where deputies soon responded, Tod Goodyear said.

Monday, Goodyear updated your Mims Community Correspondent James Sparvero that the boy was with adults on Kennedy Street in East Mims when shots were fired out of a car driving by.

Sparvero asked Goodyear why he thinks the boy wasn’t the intended target.

“Based on the circumstances of a vehicle driving by, a small group being there, shots being fired at that group, and him being 11 and in fourth grade, I think he was the youngest person there, it was probably not intended for him,” he answered.

Sparvero also talked to miss Georgia Mitchell, a minister of the Mims Church of God in the neighborhood, about the boy being shot.

In 2022 in East Mims, 16-year-old Da’Mari Wilson was shot and killed.

Unlike that case, no one’s been arrested yet for shooting the 11-year-old.

Mitchell said she knows his family.

“We never had this when we was growing up, none of this, all this shooting,” she said. “So, what I’ve been doing, I’ve been praying against it. I’ve been believing God to set this community free. Bring back the unity that we used to have.”

The sheriff’s office Monday said that the boy is doing fine.
