ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Orange County and Apopka city leaders will be holding a public meeting Tuesday night to discuss ways to improve all aspects of road travel, including vehicles, walking, bicycling and public transit.

District 2 Orange County Commissioner Christine Moore, together with the Orange County Transportation Planning Division and the City of Apopka, are hosting the meeting that is focused on long-range transportation plan.

The Northwest Orange County Areawide Transportation (NOWOCATS) study, which began in April 2025, covers Apopka’s core urban center, 44 intersections and 27 roadways. Consultants hired by Orange County Government and the Transportation Planning Division will present current roadway conditions, highlighting roads that fail to provide a reasonable level of service.

The meeting will offer attendees the chance to view maps outlining areas of concern, followed by a presentation and a question-and-answer session.

According to the NOWOCATS website, without strategic planning and investment, the current infrastructure in northwest Orange County will not be able to meet the area’s future mobility demands.

Rich Bautista tells News 6 he’s already seeing issues in the area.

“I’ve noticed an increase in traffic, especially near the planning of new communities. When we first got here it was very little,” he said.

Otis Dover has lived on the Round Lake for more than 50 years and has seen the increase as well. He believes the road is already dealing with more cars than it can handle.

“I know it’s over capacity,” Dover said. “Now you can’t get out on the road without getting run over. In fact I’ve been here right here at this intersection trying to make a left turn.”

Dover worries the problems will only get worse as more people move into town.

“I know development is out of control,” he said. “It’s just way too congested out here.”

Commissioner Christine Moore calls the meeting an opportunity for all roadway users in northwest Apopka to share their concerns and ideas.

“This effort began after I successfully got county staff to meet with City of Apopka transportation staff. They had several difficult decisions. The county’s position is the high cost of roadway expansion should be fairly shared by the City of Apopka along with Orange County,” she said in a statement.

The meeting is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kelly Park School in Apopka.
