APOPKA, Fla. – An Apopka family had a construction lien placed on their home for thousands of dollars after a roofing company failed to pay its suppliers.
It comes after a News 6 investigation revealed the same company, Hurricane Roofer, cashed insurance checks from multiple customers in Orange and Palm Beach counties and never replaced their roofs.

Norman Cook does not have a high opinion of Hurricane Roofer after getting the letter in the mail that a lien is on his property for $7,617.89 for unpaid roofing materials.
“They don’t pay their contractors and their suppliers. They don’t, and it shows that they’re not paying them because now we have a lien on our house for something that we already paid for,” Cook said.
After a hailstorm hit their community, the Cooks received a $18,000 payout from their insurance company to replace their roof.
They hired Hurricane Roofer because a neighbor used the company, Cook said.
“In installments, yes, we paid them in full,” he said.
According to an invoice, the total cost of the job was $22,500, but they received $4,000 in credits for other issues, leaving a balance of $18,500.
They made a $10,500 down payment, paid $5,000 in September 2025, and a final $3,000 payment, according to a canceled check.
News 6 went to Hurricane Roofer’s office on Lake Underhill in Orlando but got no answer.
The office phone is now disconnected.
Owner Tim Fickes’ cell phone voicemail is full and cannot accept messages.
He has not responded to text messages.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) gave Hurricane Roofer an “F” rating for failure to respond to five complaints and issued an alert for misusing the BBB logo and falsely stating BBB accreditation, according to their website.
The Cooks say they now have to hire an attorney to deal with the lien.
“It just boils my blood to the point where it’s just, it’s ridiculous,” Cook said.
Last November, News 6 reported on the Coleman family who live in the same neighborhood as the Cook’s.
The family got a $28,000 check as a settlement with the insurance company after the storm to replace their roof.
The check was made out to Steve and Yvette Coleman, the mortgage company and Hurricane Roofer.
The insurance company confirmed the check was cashed last July 29, but Hurricane Roofer still has not replaced the roof.

Scott Bahr and Christina Baez from Palm Beach County contacted News 6 after seeing that report.
“My jaw dropped,” Baez said.
“We saw the News 6 article with the Colemans, we’re like, that is exactly what’s happening to us here,” Bahr said.
The couple filed an insurance claim and received a check for more than $20,000 for a new roof, after a hailstorm hit their neighborhood. On June 10, 2025, they signed a contract with Hurricane Roofer and paid a $11,500 deposit, according to the agreement.
The contract stated the roof would start in about six weeks.
To this date, the company has not started the roof.
The couples neighbor, Charly Benoit, confirmed he had similar issues with Hurricane Roofer.
Benoit also saw our initial investigation and contacted us.
“As soon as I paid him, everything changed,” Benoit said.
His insurance company paid out a claim for a new roof and gave him a $11,000 check, which he endorsed to a Hurricane Roofer employee in May 2025, Benoit said.
Since then, he says, “it’s excuses after excuses.”
His insurance company confirmed the check was cashed, according to Benoit, but his roof still has not been replaced.
“I feel that I got played and really I feel powerless,” he said.
Hurricane Roofer is not affiliated with other businesses of similar names, such as Hurricane Roofing and Construction of Orlando.
