Musk-owned ‘Boring Company’ tapped to tunnel from Universal Studios to Epic Universe

Shingle Creek board meeting held Wednesday

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Boring Company, founded and owned by Elon Musk, has been picked to dig tunnels connecting Universal’s Orlando theme parks.

The Shingle Creek Transit and Utility Community Development District voted Wednesday to move ahead with having The Boring Company design and build such infrastructure improvements between Universal’s first and latest Central Florida theme parks.

Board members rated each company interested in the project — V2R, The Boring Company, and Sunshine Connection Partners — based on how well the companies fit their vision to establish and maintain new infrastructure between Universal Orlando and Epic Universe. The Boring Company received the highest score.

The Boring Company is known for its expertise in underground tunnels. It’s what’s behind the “Vegas Loop” in Nevada, which shuttles people to and from in Tesla vehicles.

A representative from Glydways, a company part of the Sunshine Connection Partners that wasn’t picked for the project, confirmed that the scope involves connecting the different Universal parks and CityWalk to reduce traffic and make it easier for tourists to visit all Universal properties.

Brian Guttier, representing Glydways, emphasized that construction speed was a key consideration in the decision.

“Tunnels typically are very slow to build. Boring Company talks about building them very quickly,” Guttier said.

The underground transit system is designed to enhance the guest experience, according to transit board discussions.

“Looking back at the request, it was focused primarily on Epic to CityWalk, the connection to the new park. They wanted a more premium passenger experience,” Guttier noted, adding, “Obviously, you spend a lot of money at Universal. You want to maximize the time in the park, maximize the experience.”

Visitors to Universal Orlando expressed enthusiasm for the project.

“I think it’d be a great idea, it’ll cut down on traffic everywhere around here,” one park guest said. Another visitor added, “You’re gonna save time, so I think it’s a good idea.”

Plans for the project have not yet been released. Efforts to reach out to The Boring Company for more details are ongoing.
