‘Out of control:’ Teen booked luxury Airbnb for alcohol, drug-filled 18th birthday party, police say

Cecilio Rosas used different name when booking, owners say

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Unbeknownst to the owners, 80 to 100 teenagers showed up to their Melbourne gated, waterfront Airbnb, police said, for a house party with alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine.

Melbourne police on Sunday arrested Cecilio Rosas, who police said booked the Airbnb for his 18th birthday party.

At a condo building next to the Airbnb on U.S. 1, HOA president Art Hautau told your Melbourne Community Correspondent James Sparvero he almost called police because some of the teens came onto his property.

“I assumed there were drugs or at least alcohol,” Hautau said. “It was definitely one of those out-of-control parties.”

The arrest report for Rosas reads he paid a friend to be security and they charged admission.

Police told Sparvero a parent of one of the kids saw their child posting pictures of the alcohol on social media, but when police got here and told Rosas they were taking the teen home, police said at first, Rosas wouldn’t let them in the gate.

Sparvero reached the Airbnb’s owners, and while they didn’t want to be a part of this story, they told James that Rosas fooled them because he booked their Airbnb under a different name.

Hautau hopes he’s seen the last party.

“This property’s high-end property,” the neighbor said. “It’s better served with people who live here permanently, respect the environment, and the neighbors.”

Sparvero made public records requests with Melbourne police for the 911 call from the concerned parent and police body-camera video.

An Airbnb spokesperson provided News 6 with the following statement:

Disruptive parties are strictly prohibited on Airbnb, and this type of behavior has no place on our platform. We’ve removed the account of the person who made the booking and have suspended the listing as our team investigates thoroughly. We stand ready to assist the Melbourne Police Department with their investigation.

The spokesperson further said that the person who booked the reservation did not disclose or have permission from the host to have a gathering, as well as that individuals under 18 are prohibited from having an Airbnb account and third-party bookings are also not allowed.
