THE VILLAGES, Fla. – A chlorine leak in The Villages on Thursday evening sparked a “Shelter in Place” order, according to first responders.

Sumter County Fire & EMS originally announced that first responders were headed to the leak at the Turtle Mound Golf Course.

Fire officials said that a call came in around 7 p.m. to report the leak, which apparently stemmed from a maintenance shed at the golf course.

“As a result of the incident, a Shelter in Place Order is currently in effect until further notice for residents living within 1.5 miles of the golf course,” a release reads. “The order advises residents to go indoors immediately, close and lock all doors and windows, and turn off air conditioners and ventilation systems.”

But shortly before 10 p.m., officials announced that the Shelter in Place order had been lifted.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
