Ditch digging to alleviate flooding pits Titusville neighbor against neighbor

Brevard project called waste of money by one neighbor

TITUSVILLE, Fla. – It’s a project addressing drainage and flooding complaints in Titusville, but some people on the street think digging ditches along the county right-of-way could create more problems in their neighborhood.

Your Titusville Community Correspondent, James Sparvero, found out it’s become an issue that’s not only pitted neighbors against the county, but neighbors against neighbors on South Fork Road.

Karl Daday spoke to Sparvero Friday as he watched heavy construction equipment dig the ditches.

“It’s a waste of money,” the resident said. “Right now, we’re in a drought, and you can see they’ve dug below the water table. As soon as it rains, these ditches are gonna be full of water.”

Daday said he’d like to see the county abandon the project.

“What I want to see happen, quite honestly, is they fill this back in and put it back the way it was,” he said.

The way it was across the street wasn’t OK for Daday’s neighbor, Gary Watson.

“Last time we had a big rain, it took us seven days to pump the water,” he told Sparvero.

Watson said he’s glad the county’s doing the project, unlike Daday.

“We’ve always had a problem on this side of the street. I don’t care about him,” Watson said about his neighbor. “He’s on the other side of the street for us.”

When asked for comment, the county said it’s not getting in the middle of any neighbors’ disputes but said the project will make flooding less severe.

Daday said next he’ll be speaking out at Tuesday night’s county commission meeting.

That’ll be his chance to address North Brevard Commissioner Katie Delaney, whom Sparvero talked to back in the fall following Titusville’s record flooding.
