BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A 21-year-old woman is recovering after being shot a total of four times, and to the relief of her family, even more, police said they’ve caught her boyfriend, who was on the run.
At the Riverpark Apartments, Good Samaritan Dwayne Hawkins told News 6 Cocoa Community Correspondent James Sparvero he came to the rescue on Wednesday, even before paramedics could get there.
Hawkins said the young woman was bleeding profusely.
“I just went in and got some towels and tried to make a tourniquet on her leg and then her chest,” Hawkins explained. “Then, come to find out, she was shot four times.”

Hawkins said keeping the victim calm was crucial to her survival.
“She just said she’s been shot, and I just told her to calm down, relax,” he said. “She was scared, but she was calm though, so, we got through it, and she’s OK.”
At the police station, Lt. Bryan Stillwell told Sparvero that authorities found Guy Potter, 19, on Thursday in Cocoa.
Last September, in an unrelated shooting, police said Potter shot through a Rockledge apartment building.
No one was hit, and all charges were later dropped.
This shooting, Lt. Stillwell commended Hawkins for being there for his neighbor.
“It does look like, at this point, the victim is gonna pull through, and I believe the victim is very lucky in that sense,” he said.
Hawkins said he doesn’t consider himself a hero.
“I didn’t do it for gratitude,” he said. “I did it because it was a human life. She was my neighbor’s daughter.”
Police said Potter isn’t answering their questions, so they don’t have a possible motive yet to the shooting.
More could come to light in an arrest report that will be made available.
