PALM COAST, Fla. – A 50-year-old Palm Coast man was arrested Monday after an alleged stabbing led to a high-speed chase, according to deputies.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said the victim told deputies that his roommate, Jose Cortes Nieves, drove away in a red Honda CR-V after the stabbing.
Deputies said they located the car a short time later near Belle Terre Boulevard and attempted a traffic stop, but Cortes Nieves fled.
Flagler sheriff’s officials said Cortes Nieves repeatedly accelerated through red lights while fleeing, which successfully ended with the deployment of stop sticks.
Cortes Nieves was taken into custody, and deputies said they found a black knife in the car that matched the description provided by the victim.

During an interview following his arrest, Cortes Nieves admitted to stabbing his roommate and said that he wanted to apologize, according to deputies.
“Cortez Nieves turned to extreme violence over a minor money dispute with his roommate. He then put others at risk by recklessly fleeing from law enforcement,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Our deputies acted quickly to stop this dangerous suspect and take him into custody before anyone else was hurt.”
Cortes Nieves faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury and fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement at high speed.
Cortes Nieves was taken to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and was being held on a $150,000 bond.
Cortes Nieves has previous convictions in Connecticut for possession of narcotics, larceny and failure to appear.
