Brevard brush fire burns near church, school

Five-acre fire under control Thursday

Firefighters got a five-acre brush fire under control Thursday in central Brevard County.

Unlike in Mims, no homes had to be evacuated around the Melbourne and Palm Shores area, which also has businesses and a church near Wickham Road and the Pineda Causeway.

Kristin Pakulak, the children’s ministry director at the Faith Fellowship Church, described to Palm Shores Community Correspondent James Sparvero what the fire looked like.

“One of our coworkers came back from running an errand and saw the black smoke behind our building and came into my office and said, ‘let’s go check this out,’” Pakulak said. “So, we ran around the side and saw fire, flames all the way to the top of the trees. Immediately, came in and called 911. The fire department was out here within minutes. They had a great response, and I’m so thankful for our first responders. They really did a great job in quick response and helping us out here.”

The good news extended to the Holy Trinity school, which was near the fire too.

The school told James that students were allowed to go home early, and after-school activities were cancelled.
