TIMELINE: Police reveal what happened during deadly standoff in Palm Bay neighborhood

Video shows police shootout before death of 53-year-old Kamla Grimmer

PALM BAY, Fla. – We have a new look at the gunfire that came from a house as police took cover in the middle of a deadly standoff.

Three hours later Monday, after officers returned fire, police said the barricaded woman inside the house alone was dead.

Police have now identified that woman as 53-year-old Kamla Grimmer

Tuesday was our first chance to show you the Serenade Street house up close.

There were bullet holes in the windows, and at the front door, there was even more damage following all those gunshots.

Your Palm Bay Community Correspondent, James Sparvero, asked neighbors how it made them feel that something like this could happen next-door.

“I guess you really don’t know your neighbors very well these days,” Mikayla Calabrese answered.

Calabrese and Ivan Gonzalez captured the terrifying video of the shootout with their home surveillance cameras.

The couple told Sparvero they didn’t really know their neighbor, so they’re wondering more about how this all started too.

“I guess just to unfold what happened, unless it was like a mental illness,” Gonzalez said when asked what he would ask investigators. “That’s the only reason I can see that happening.”

“I guess I would wonder how it escalated to that point,” Calabrese said.

On Tuesday evening, police released a timeline of what happened, which is as follows:

2:58 p.m.

An anonymous phone call about “loud music” came in from the 800 block of Serenade Street Northwest.

3:40 p.m.

Police received another anonymous phone call about loud music.

3:58 p.m.

Police received a separate call stating that a woman fired off multiple rounds from her home, located at 859 Serenade Street Northwest.

The woman was later identified as 53-year-old Kamla Grimmer.

Officers soon established a contact team after arriving on scene, making announcements via their vehicle’s public address system.

4:17 p.m.

Kamla began shooting from her residence, initially taking shots out the back of her home toward the canal, where officers were staged on a perimeter.

At this time, a “Code Red” was issued to the community, asking residents to shelter indoors.

4:35 p.m.

Police established contact with Grimmer over the phone, asking her to peacefully surrender.

4:43 p.m.

Grimmer opened her front door, fired shots and quickly retreated back inside.

A SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Team were activated, though officers hadn’t returned fire up to this point. Officers again contacted her over the phone in hopes of a peaceful resolution.

5:13 p.m.

SWAT team members and crisis negotiators arrived on scene.

6:06 p.m.

Grimmer stood hidden in the doorway of the home.

6:09 p.m.

Grimmer opened fire toward the SWAT team, who returned fire.

She immediately retreated back inside, though it wasn’t clear at that point whether she was hurt.

6:15 p.m.

The SWAT team deployed gas into the home, though phone communication between Grimmer and crisis negotiators continued.

6:53 p.m.

More gas was deployed into the home.

7:08 p.m.

Grimmer again shot at officers, who returned fire.

After seeing no movement, officers were able to deploy a drone inside the home, where Grimmer was discovered to be immobile.

7:17 p.m.

The SWAT team and medics entered into the home, where Grimmer was found dead. The investigation suggests she may have been killed by return fire from officers.

No injuries to officers or other citizens were reported, nor was there a hostage situation, investigators explained. However, the officers involved are on paid administrative leave.

In addition, police said there was no substantial history that could have led investigators to believe something to this extent would have occurred.

“We always pray for the best outcome where no life is lost,” Police Chief Mariano Augello said. “Our officers attempted every scenario possible to avoid a loss of life and showed great restraint during this incident. Unfortunately, after their lives, as well as those in our community were placed in immediate threat of deadly force by active gunfire, they were left with no other option but to return fire.”

No additional information has been provided at this time.
