ORLANDO, Fla. – An exciting day, as Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando gets ready to open their brand new Orlando shelter!

It comes nearly five years after the previous shelter was destroyed in a fire.

An electrical issue caused the fire, and unfortunately, 17 cats were killed.

Officials told News 6 two years ago, before the fire they took in 7,000 animals a year.

Since the fire, they say they’ve only been able to take in 4,000 to 5,000 per year.

Operations during that time have been split between the group’s Sanford shelter and a temporary shelter in Downtown Orlando.

Sunday, the new shelter will have a grand opening “pawty” at noon, with live DJ entertainment, food trucks, activities and more!

The shelter says, of course, adoptable dogs and cats will be waiting to go to their “furrever” homes.
