ORLANDO, Fla. – A 16-year-old arrested as part of the investigation into a “gang-related” shooting that injured four juveniles in Orlando’s Parramore neighborhood has been charged as an adult.
Cody Doggett faces a charge of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm in connection with the Feb. 15 shooting outside a restaurant.
According to Orlando police, officers were called to the Sister Soul Food on South Parramore Avenue, where they found four juveniles suffering from gunshot wounds.
Three of the juveniles suffered non‑life‑threatening injuries. All were taken to a nearby hospital.
According to police, the shooting stemmed from a gang-related dispute, during which ”multiple individuals exchanged gunfire before fleeing in various directions."
Gunfire also tore through a woman’s hair bun inside the restaurant, pierced a television and a food container, and shattered multiple windows.
Orlando police said they later determined that Doggett returned to the chaotic scene about a minute after the initial gunfire and opened fire on the crowd helping the injured juveniles. One of those rounds struck the victim in the head, causing a critical injury.
Doggett was in court Wednesday, with his attorney arguing that his family is prepared to keep the teenager out of trouble if he were given a bond.
“I just let him go out one day, he doesn’t even really go out the door just we just let him out go this one day and this happened,” Doggett’s mother, Keshaina Wilson, said.
“Cody is a good student, kid. He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. I know my son is in fear of this, is going through it, emotionally depressed. I know I can help them do better. Just keep him closer to me.”
But the state filed a motion to keep him behind bars as the case continues.
“Because this case involves such an egregious use of unjustified force in broad daylight, in public around other people with the business nearby, that’s why the state is saying that we have reached the burden of substantial probability that conditions of bond can reasonably protect the community from this,” Prosecutor Jared Shapiro told the court.
Given the details of the case, including video of the incident, the judge denied Doggett bond.
“I appreciate that his family thinks that they can supervise him. However, the court does not share that confidence,” Judge Cherish Adams said.
Doggett’s next court hearing is set for Monday.
