COCOA BEACH, Fla. – Two visitors to Central Florida were killed due to a rip current off Cocoa Beach on Tuesday afternoon, according to the fire department.
In a release, fire officials said they responded to the water rescue emergency near 4th Street South around 1 p.m.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered four victims in the water and immediately jumped into action, beginning life-saving measures for two of them, the release shows.

Those two victims — a 42-year-old man from Connecticut, and a 34-year-old woman from Ohio — were taken to the hospital for further care, though they were ultimately pronounced dead, fire officials explained.
“Preliminary information indicates the incident was related to a rip current,” the release reads. “We extend our deepest condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic event.”
