TITUSVILLE, Fla. – Speeders — be warned.

In Titusville, a 60-day warning period for those speeding in a school zone during school hours is coming to an end next week. Police have been using cameras to catch drivers with a heavy foot.

On Monday, if you’re caught speeding, you’ll get a $100 fine.

Initial speed studies before the cameras showed a staggering reality in Titusville. 80% - 90% of drivers were flying through school zones, but now, thanks to the speed cameras, that’s changed.

“The numbers that we’ve gotten back just to our 60-day waiting period, we have one zone that had a 98% reduction already,” said Major Jeremy Gonzalez. “The lowest reduction we’ve had is 76%.”

On Monday, drivers caught going 11 mph or faster in a school zone will be fined.

The cameras will be active throughout the entire school day, including 30 minutes before and after school.

“We have a speeding problem in the school zone, we had to find a solution. This was our solution,” said Major Gonzalez.

This is phase one of the project. Phase two will start at the beginning of the next school year. Cameras are already going up in those areas. No word on when phase three will be implemented.
