MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A 2-year-old boy died after he fell into a pool in Marion County over the weekend, according to the sheriff’s office.

In a report, deputies said they responded to the incident along Northwest 18th Place in Dunnellon on Saturday afternoon.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that the toddler and his family members had gone outside to feed the animals on the property, the report shows.

“(His uncle) advised he did not notice the juvenile decedent was not with him, and then he observed the juvenile decedent’s father... pulling the juvenile decedent from the pool,” the incident report reads.

The father then reportedly provided CPR to the toddler before the child was taken to the hospital, according to investigators.

However, the sheriff’s office revealed that the child ultimately died.

The Florida Department of Health warns families to keep their infants safe when around bodies of water, as drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death to children ages 1-4.

“Most infant drownings occur in just a few inches of water, such as a bathtub or bucket,” state officials caution. “Home swimming pools are where most children are likely to drown. However, natural bodies of water still pose threats to older children and adults.”
