A Florida man was charged with federal hate crime in Ocala for setting fire to a church. According to the indictment, Shields intentionally set fire to the Queen of Peace Catholic Church on July 11, 2020. Shields is charged with one count of intentional damage to religious property, a hate crime charge that falls under the Church Arson Prevention Act, and one count of using fire to commit a felony. If convicted, Shields faces a maximum term of 20 years imprisonment for intentionally damaging religious property. Shields faces an additional mandatory minimum of 10 years for using fire to commit a felony.

DUNNELLON, Fla. – A man shot and killed his mother and grandmother before committing suicide during a SWAT standoff in Marion County, sheriff’s officials said. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called Sunday night for a shooting on SW Plantation Street in Dunnellon. AdThe MCSO SWAT team was called and an hours-long standoff ensued, sheriff’s officials said. Officials said efforts were made to resolve the situation, but Michael Chiswick fired shots at a deputy and others. “This is a difficult situation for everyone involved and our prayers are with the victims’ family,” Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said.
Motorcyclist killed in crash with dump truck in Marion County
A 45-year-old Dunnellon man was killed Friday morning in a crash involving a motorcycle and a dump truck in Marion County, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The fatal crash was reported at 6:40 a.m. on State Road 40 at SW 113 Terrace near Ocala. The FHP said the dump truck, driven by a 57-year-old Ocala man, made a U-turn and entered the path of the motorcycle, which struck the truck. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. The crash is under investigation.
3 dead after fiery crash on State Road 200 in Marion County
MARION COUNTY, Fla. – Two women and a 16-year-old girl were killed in a head-on, fiery crash on State Road 200 in Marion County Friday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers said a 60-year-old Crystal River man was driving a pickup truck towing a 12-foot trailer eastbound on State Road 200 near County Road 484 around 6:20 a.m. when he failed to maintain his lane and entered into the westbound lane. After the initial crash, troopers said the truck hit the left side of a second sedan that was also in the westbound lane. The 39-year-old woman driving the first sedan and a 16-year-old girl who was in the back seat died at the scene of the crash. The 73-year-old woman driving the second sedan also died at the scene of the crash.
16-year-old driver killed, second teen injured in fiery Marion County crash

A 16-year-old driver was killed and a 17-year-old passenger was critically injured late Saturday in a crash in Marion County, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The fatal crash happened along Southwest 108th Street in Dunnellon. Troopers say the driver was speeding, lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree, causing the car to burst into flames. The teen passenger was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, the FHP said. The victims names have not been released.
Marion County moves to resume vacation rentals
On Tuesday, the Marion County Commission agreed, by consensus, to send a plan to the state to resume vacation rentals. He said the rental properties represent part of his retirement income. The county emailed the plan to the DBPR on Tuesday and sent a copy by overnight mail. People are far safer at my vacation rental than in (a hotel)," he said. Marion County was among the first in the state to submit a plan.

The 33-year-old was released from prison in May 2019 after serving a decade for multiple offenses including kidnapping, battery on a person older than 65 and drug possession, the Sheriffs Office said.

learns to make fairy gardensThe Philanthropic Educational Organization met on Jan. 9 at the home of Lyn Helseth to learn how to make fairy dish gardens. Chapter GE and the Ocala P.E.O. gives scholarships for education to women throughout the world. Their Five Projects are scholarships which are given to high school graduate girls and adult women who have not completed their education. They have a four-year college for women in Nevada, Missouri, where women can recieve an education on scholarship.

James L. Whitehurst II faces 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. DUNNELLON A 49-year-old Dunnellon man accused of threatening multiple people favorable to President Donald Trump, was arrested and charged with 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of disorderly conduct by police. The victims told an officer that a man, later identified as James L. Whitehurst II, had approached them during their peaceful assembly with what was described as a cane sword in hand. The officer was told Whitehurst pointed the sword in their faces and made threatening statements. Feliciani spoke with Whitehurst, who told her he removed the sword from its holder and pointed it at the Trump supporters.
