MIDWAY, Fla. – Families living in Midway are seeing the price of progress as work is happening on a long-awaited plan to fix flooding issues that have plagued the community for decades.
Road closures are happening along sections of Jitway Avenue and Hughey Street as four phases of the eight-part drainage improvement project are in progress.

Rondalin Washington lives nearby and said she’s looking forward to completion of the work to help with flooding in the neighborhood.
“It’s almost like a river, like a small little river out in front or a pond that was out in front of the house,” Washington said. “I guess they’re doing what they need to do to get it done.”
The current work includes installation of drainage pipes, construction of a drainage pond near the Midway Community Center, and additional infrastructure improvements.
In 2018, residents went straight to the Seminole County Commission to voice their concerns over the flooding problems.
The action sparked a conversation with county leaders that got the ball rolling toward the beginning steps of the project
Through advocacy and action, easements were acquired from property owners for construction to begin.
The total cost of the project has grown to $33.5 million. It is being paid for with both federal and state grants, along with county funds from the sales tax.
Each of the phases that are currently under construction is expected to be completed by early 2027.
The four remaining parts of the project are each in the right-of-way acquisition phase.
