APOPKA, Fla. – Apopka city leaders are meeting Monday night to decide whether to raise the city’s property tax rate by 32%, just days after commissioners failed to agree on a final number.
The proposal would increase the millage rate by 0.75 and generate an additional $6.6 million for the city. For homeowners with a $300,000 property, the increase would mean about $187 more per year in taxes.
Commissioner Nadia Anderson was the only member of the Apopka City Commission to oppose the increase earlier this month. Anderson said she planned to raise residents’ concerns at the meeting, even if they called her moments before it started.
The rest of the commission signaled support for the budget tied to the higher rate.
City leaders have until Friday to set the millage rate. The special commission meeting is set for 6 p.m. A final budget vote is scheduled for Sept. 3.
The decision is also unfolding as Florida voters are months away from deciding on a statewide property tax amendment on the November ballot — one that could significantly affect future tax revenue for cities like Apopka.
