ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Florida investigators are asking for the public’s help to find three suspects accused of traveling the country and stealing from the dead.
Detectives say the group targeted cemeteries, breaking into niches that hold cremated remains and taking family heirlooms left with loved ones — items that can be priceless to grieving relatives.
Authorities have identified the suspects as Drake Lee Milam, 33; his girlfriend, Porsche Bancroft, 32; and Bancroft’s mother, Angela Garrett, 52. Investigators say all three have warrants and can be extradited back to Florida to face charges.
The alleged thefts have struck a nerve for families who believed their loved ones’ resting places were secure. Investigators say items taken may include jewelry and keepsakes placed inside niches — such as wedding rings — stolen for quick profit.
Statewide, officials say there are at least 20 reported cases in Florida, but detectives believe the number could be higher. The Attorney General’s Office of Statewide Prosecution is handling the case.
Investigators say the suspects are believed to live in Indianapolis, but may have committed similar crimes in at least nine states.
Officials are urging families to check their loved one’s resting place to make sure items are still secure.
