MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A street race last weekend led to the death of a 77-year-old woman, and both of the suspected drivers have finally been caught, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
In a release, troopers said the incident first happened on Aug. 8, when a street-racing incident sparked a multi-vehicle crash along Southwest 49th Avenue Road, close to Southwest 82nd Place.
The Florida Highway Patrol says two cars were speeding recklessly in the northbound lanes when one of the cars struck an SUV that was entering the intersection.
The crash resulted in the death of the elderly woman, identified as a passenger in the SUV. Meanwhile, the 48-year-old driver suffered serious injuries, troopers noted.
Afterward, one of the other drivers involved in the street race — identified as 21-year-old Misaiah Enriquez — fled the scene, though he was later arrested by the U.S. Marshals Task Force in Miami, the release states.
He is being extradited back to Marion County, where he will face charges of vehicular homicide, fleeing or eluding law enforcement at high speed, reckless driving, and a pending charge of racing on the highway.
Meanwhile, another driver — identified as Cesar Estrada-Garcia, 28 — voluntarily turned himself in at the Marion County Jail on Friday morning, investigators revealed.
Troopers said Estrada-Garcia faces charges of racing on the highway; vehicular homicide; reckless driving causing a crash involving serious injury; reckless driving causing injury; and reckless driving causing property damage. He is held without bond.
