SANFORD, Fla. – Sanford police have taken two BMW sedans into custody connected to a mass shooting that wounded eight people during a street memorial Saturday night for an 18-year-old killed in a crash six years ago.
Officers responded just before 10 p.m. to the area of Poplar Avenue and West 10th Street, where a group had gathered in the street for a celebration of life honoring Zi’Erric Wynn, a Seminole High School senior who died in a crash 6 years earlier.
According to a heavily redacted police report, a witness told officers multiple people got out of a car and opened fire — and that at least one person carried what was described as a “long gun.” Police arrived within minutes and secured the scene.
Of the eight victims, five have been treated and released from the hospital. Three remain hospitalized — two in critical condition and one in stable condition.
Police seek public help identifying drivers
Investigators are looking for two BMW 530I Series 4-door sedans — one black, one white — described as newer model vehicles.
Sanford Police Public Information Officer Bianca Gillette said witnesses saw both vehicles circling the gathering before the shooting.
“A number of witnesses had observed two vehicles traveling around the radius of the celebration of life gathering, on the roads, some of them were driving recklessly,” Bianca Gillette said.
Police are not asking the public to locate the vehicles — they are already in custody. Instead, investigators are asking anyone who attended the gathering to search their photos and video for images of the two BMWs.
“We’re not asking people to locate those vehicles, we have those vehicles in custody,” Bianca Gillette said. “What we are looking for are any video or picture images that were captured of these vehicles in this area prior to the incident.”
No arrests made; motive unknown
No arrests have been made. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
