SANFORD, Fla. ā The City of Sanford is considering a significant increase in emergency medical transport fees that could cost patients hundreds of dollars more to take an ambulance to the hospital.
Commissioners are set to vote on a resolution Monday that would raise emergency medical transport fees across all service levels to $1,000.
Since 2018, the fee for Basic Life Support (BLS) has been $650. Advanced Life Support I (ALS I) ā which includes an electrocardiogram and up to three medications ā is $700. Advanced Life Support II (ALS II) ā which includes advanced procedures or three or more medications ā is $800.
Under the new rate proposal, every form of emergency medical transport would cost $1,000.
A fire department spokesperson said the proposed increase is meant to cover rising costs for several items, including fuel and medical supplies.
In July, Fire Chief Ronnie McNeil submitted a chart to the city showing Sanfordās transport fees were among the lowest compared to similar jurisdictions.
With the proposed increase, Sanfordās transport fees would match Longwoodās fees, placing both cities among the higher rates in the area.
The city says the fee and rate structure is supported by an independent study, which also found the mileage charge should increase from $10 to $15 per patient loaded mile.
The fee resolution would take effect as soon as it is passed. Commissioners will vote on the measure Monday at 7 p.m.
