2 men detained for questioning in DeLand homicide

26-year-old victim fatally shot Wednesday night

DELAND, Fla. – Two men have been identified as persons of interest in the death of a 26-year-old man who was shot to death near DeLand, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies on Friday identified the victim as Bryant Ball, 26, whom they described as homeless.

The shooting was reported about 8:35 p.m. Wednesday in the 900 block of South Florida Avenue.

Deputies said witnesses reported hearing a number of gunshots, but it was unclear where they originated.

Ball was found wounded and was airlifted to a hospital, where he later died, deputies said. 

Witnesses said Ball and another man were arguing prior to the shooting.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said Thursday that two men were detained for questioning.
