Police: Man was walking on tracks near Orange Avenue, Wilkinson Street

ORLANDO, Fla. – A man was hit and killed by a Sunrail train Thursday evening in Orlando, police said.

Police said the man, identified by police as William Milligan, 84, was walking on the railroad tracks near Orange Avenue and Wilkinson Street around at 7:11 p.m. when he was hit by the passenger train.

Milligan, who lived near the tracks and was diagnosed with dementia, was crossing the tracks in the path of the train and did not get all the way across to avoid being struck, police said.

Video from the train was viewed. Police said there was nothing suspicious about the incident.

The Florida Department of Transportation said the incident happened on the northbound track and the train involved was held at the scene with 35 passengers on board. No injuries were reported to passengers or crew.

The train was cleared from the scene and was on the move Thursday night, FDOT said. The last northbound train of the night was also making its way to DeBary just behind the other.

FDOT said other trains were able to get around by using the adjacent southbound track. A relief train was on standby on the corridor and near the scene if needed.

Officials from FDOT told News 6 on Friday that $400,000 has been budgeted to add chain link fencing along the rail corridor of 12 sites in Orange and Seminole counties in an attempt to eliminate cut-through foot traffic over the mainline railroad tracks.

Construction for the project is slated to begin in January.
