The “no tax on Social Security” policy is also a temporary deduction that was in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. That policy allows seniors 65 or older to claim an extra temporary deduction on up to $6,000 for single tax filers, and $12,000 for married couples filing jointly.
The deduction is scheduled to expire after 2028.
As News 6 has reported before, the “no tax on tips” policy actually is a tax deduction on tips. It allows eligible employees and self-employed workers in certain occupations to deduct up to $25,000 in qualified tips from their federal income taxes. The deduction begins to phase out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income above $150,000, or $300,000 for joint filers.
Analysis from the Yale Budget Lab found that less than 3% of families would benefit from a broad-based tip deduction in 2026.
