Rockledge condo fire sends one person to hospital, neighbors say

Victim's family says he suffered serious burns

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. – A man was airlifted to an Orlando hospital with serious burns after a condo in Rockledge caught fire overnight, neighbors told News 6.

Antoinette Broomfield said she got home around midnight Saturday and saw first responders surrounding her condo building.

"I was coming down Huntington and you could see a ball full of smoke," Broomfield said.

The condos are located on Huntington Lane, not far from Rockledge City Hall. Broomfield said the unit underneath her home caught fire.

"The drywall melted. I mean, everything is completely gone," she said.

Neighbors said they saw smoke coming into their units through the vents. Broomfield said there were two people inside the condo when the fire broke out.

"He broke the bottom glass to get out. You can see the spots of blood where he went up to knock on my door to make sure we were OK, but then he went back in, I heard, to get the gentleman, I think to pull him out," Broomfield said.

The victims' family returned to the burned condo Saturday morning to salvage any belongings they could. A family member told News 6 one victim suffered serious burns.

Residents said the building is made of concrete, which prevented the fire from spreading. Other nearby units only suffered smoke damage.

Broomfield is thankful it wasn't worse.

"The firemen were telling me it's hot. You could feel the heat from my floor, but it didn't go up," she said. "That's a good thing. We have a very safe building."

News 6 called the Rockledge fire and police departments multiple times. No one could tell us what happened, what caused the fire, or confirm any injuries.

The community is now cleaning up and keeping their neighbors in their prayers.

"I just continue to pray for him and just make sure he's OK. That's my number one concern," Broomfield said.
