Apopka’s Hall of Fame fighter Christy Martin talks new movie about her life

‘Christy’ starring Sydney Sweeney opens Nov. 7

Christy Martin is a trailblazer in sports. She led the way for women in boxing, becoming one of the best of all time. Fighting professionally from 1989 to 2012, Martin won 49 fights with 32 knockouts. She became a world champion and a multiple hall of famer.

The Apopka resident is a survivor in and out of the ring.

Fifteen years ago, Martin fought for her life after a brutal attack by her then-husband, Jim. Stabbed and shot, she was left for dead on the street of her neighborhood. Christy overcame the horrific night, becoming an advocate for victims of domestic violence.

Christy’s incredible life story is being in told in a new movie. “Christy” stars Sydney Sweeney as Christy Martin. It opens in theaters on Nov. 7 and will take audiences through the boxing champion’s rise in the ring and her survival outside of it.
