Wartime Ukraine erasing Russian past from public spaces

KYIV, Ukraine — (AP) — On the streets of Kyiv, Fyodor Dostoevsky is on the way out. Ukrainian has traditionally been spoken more in the western part of the country — a region that early on shunned Russian and Soviet imagery. The eastern city of Dnipro on Friday pulled down a bust of Alexander Pushkin — like Dostoevsky, a giant of 19th century Russian literature. And in need of Russian civilization,” said Wilson, whose book "The Ukrainians” was recently published in its fifth edition. A street named for philosopher Friedrich Engels will honor Ukrainian avant-garde poet Bohdan-Ihor Antonych.

Climate protesters target Warhol art in Australian gallery

CANBERRA, Australia — (AP) — Climate protesters in Australia on Wednesday scrawled graffiti and glued themselves to an Andy Warhol artwork depicting Campbell's soup cans but didn't appear to damage the piece because it's encased in glass. It was the latest incident in which climate protesters have targeted an iconic piece of art without causing permanent damage. Other protesters have thrown soup over Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers" in London and mashed potatoes at a Claude Monet painting in Germany. The large artwork is called “Campbell's Soup I” and was created by Warhol in New York in 1968, according to the museum. The gallery said in a statement that a protest had taken place following similar incidents elsewhere in Australia and overseas.

Andy Warhol, Prince at center stage in Supreme Court case

WASHINGTON — (AP) — Andy Warhol and Prince held center stage in a copyright case before the Supreme Court on Wednesday that veered from Cheerios and "Mona Lisa" analogies to Justice Clarence Thomas' enthusiasm for the "Purple Rain" showman. The case involves a portrait of Prince that Warhol created to accompany a 1984 Vanity Fair article on the music star. Vanity Fair again featured another of Warhol's Prince portraits, this time an orange-faced Prince that ran on the magazine's cover. Warhol had died in 1987, but the magazine paid The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts $10,250 to use the portrait. A decision in the case, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts v. Lynn Goldsmith, 21-869, is expected by the end of June when the Supreme Court typically breaks for its summer recess.

Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe portrait could fetch record $200 million at auction

NEW YORK — An iconic piece of Americana is headed for the auction block at Christie’s this May in New York, and it could also be headed for the record books. The 1964 Andy Warhol silk-screen of Marilyn Monroe, known as “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn,” could sell for as much as $200 million, making it the most expensive 20th-century artwork ever sold at auction, The New York Times reported. According to the newspaper, the work is part of Warhol’s signature “Shot Marilyn” portrait series, so called after a “gun-toting visitor allegedly fired a shot into a stack of canvases in the artist’s studio in 1964. “The spectacular portrait isolates the person and the star,” Georg Frei, the foundation’s chairman, said in a prepared statement. All that remains is the enigmatic smile that links her to another mysterious smile of a distinguished lady, the Mona Lisa,” he added.

US court sides with photographer in fight over Warhol art

FILE - In this 1976 file photo, pop artist Andy Warhol smiles in New York. California man sentenced in $6M modern art fraud scheme

LOS ANGELES A Southern California man who authorities say tried to sell $6 million worth of phony paintings he claimed were created by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and other modern masters was sentenced Wednesday to five years in federal prison. Philip Righter, 43, of West Hollywood was sentenced in a federal court in Miami after pleading guilty to wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and tax fraud, the U.S. attorney's office said. Righter was given 60 months in prison in a case that was filed in Los Angeles. The judge also handed down a five-year sentence in a Florida case in which Righter acknowledged trying to sell forgeries to the owner of a Miami art gallery. Richter sold the bogus artworks from 2016 through June of 2018, creating phony documents to back up his claims that they were genuine, prosecutors said.

The last Beetle rolled off the assembly line at a plant in Mexico in July, which Volkswagen de Mexico CEO Steffen Reiche said will now produce the Tarek SUV. The Volkswagen Beetle was the great equalizer for society and culture at large.
