It was the latest incident in which climate protesters have targeted an iconic piece of art without causing permanent damage. Other protesters have thrown soup over Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers" in London and mashed potatoes at a Claude Monet painting in Germany. The large artwork is called “Campbell's Soup I” and was created by Warhol in New York in 1968, according to the museum. The gallery said in a statement that a protest had taken place following similar incidents elsewhere in Australia and overseas.

WASHINGTON — (AP) — Andy Warhol and Prince held center stage in a copyright case before the Supreme Court on Wednesday that veered from Cheerios and "Mona Lisa" analogies to Justice Clarence Thomas' enthusiasm for the "Purple Rain" showman. The case involves a portrait of Prince that Warhol created to accompany a 1984 Vanity Fair article on the music star. Vanity Fair again featured another of Warhol's Prince portraits, this time an orange-faced Prince that ran on the magazine's cover. Warhol had died in 1987, but the magazine paid The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts $10,250 to use the portrait. A decision in the case, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts v. Lynn Goldsmith, 21-869, is expected by the end of June when the Supreme Court typically breaks for its summer recess.

Florida gallery owner busted for selling forged copies of high-end art pieces
A complaint filed in South Florida federal court Thursday accuses Palm Beach art dealer Daniel Elie Bouaziz of mail fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering in his alleged scheme to sell forged copies of high-end art. Bouaziz sold some of the forged art pieces for hundreds of thousands of dollars apiece, prosecutors said in a news release. Bouaziz, according to the FBI, sold one of Warhol’s works called “Superman,” of which there were several versions, for just $25,000.

According to the newspaper, the work is part of Warhol’s signature “Shot Marilyn” portrait series, so called after a “gun-toting visitor allegedly fired a shot into a stack of canvases in the artist’s studio in 1964. “The spectacular portrait isolates the person and the star,” Georg Frei, the foundation’s chairman, said in a prepared statement. All that remains is the enigmatic smile that links her to another mysterious smile of a distinguished lady, the Mona Lisa,” he added.

California man sentenced in $6M modern art fraud scheme
LOS ANGELES A Southern California man who authorities say tried to sell $6 million worth of phony paintings he claimed were created by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and other modern masters was sentenced Wednesday to five years in federal prison. Philip Righter, 43, of West Hollywood was sentenced in a federal court in Miami after pleading guilty to wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and tax fraud, the U.S. attorney's office said. Righter was given 60 months in prison in a case that was filed in Los Angeles. The judge also handed down a five-year sentence in a Florida case in which Righter acknowledged trying to sell forgeries to the owner of a Miami art gallery. Richter sold the bogus artworks from 2016 through June of 2018, creating phony documents to back up his claims that they were genuine, prosecutors said.
Volkswagen says goodbye to the iconic Beetle after 7 decades with new commercial

Volkswagen is saying goodbye to the Beetle, which ended production this year, in a new ad campaign called "The Last Mile." Volkswagen said in 2018 that it would be discontinuing the iconic Beetle compact car in 2019 as it looked toward a future with mass-market electric cars. The last Beetle rolled off the assembly line at a plant in Mexico in July, which Volkswagen de Mexico CEO Steffen Reiche said will now produce the Tarek SUV.
