Conference of U.S. conservatives opens in Orban's Hungary
BUDAPEST, Hungary — (AP) — Dozens of prominent conservatives from Europe, the United States and elsewhere gathered in Hungary on Thursday for the American Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, being held in Europe for the first time. The event represents a deepening of ties between the American right wing and the autocratic government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Delivering the opening address of the two-day conference on Thursday, Orban called Hungary “the bastion of conservative Christian values in Europe,” and urged U.S. conservatives to defeat “the dominance of progressive liberals in public life” as he said he had done in Hungary. “We must find allies in one another and coordinate the movements of our troops.”The CPAC conference is only the latest overture of partnership between Orban's government and the American right. Hungary faces financial penalties from the EU for alleged rule-of-law violations, including rolling back judicial independence and media freedom and failing to adequately tackle corruption.

Ron DeSantis opened the American Conservative Union’s annual CPAC conference in Orlando on Friday by urging delegates to follow the example of the late Rush Limbaugh in fighting for conservative policies. However, during a stemwinder that drew vigorous applause, he never mentioned Donald Trump, his political mentor, who is scheduled to address the conference over the weekend. “The battles ahead will be made more difficult without the voice of one of our greatest field generals, my friend Rush Limbaugh,” the governor said. Rush showed that fighting the left requires strength, and that conservatism devoid of backbone is doomed to fail,” he continued. Activists push for new police oversight board in Chicago
CHICAGO A couple hundred activists gathered outside of Chicago City Hall on Wednesday to call on the mayor and City Council to create a new elected board that would have the power to investigate and fire police officers. A plan to create a civilian oversight commission over the police force stalled in a City Council committee in March, but there has been a push for more civilian oversight of police departments throughout the country since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last month. CPAC is a popular idea among some activists, but it hasn't found much support among city officials. In Chicago, there is what is called the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. That authority rests with the Chicago Police Board, an independent civilian body made up of private citizens appointed by the mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council.
