Heres the process behind naming tropical storms and hurricanes
News 6 meteorologist Candace Campos explains the history and process behind naming storms during hurricane season. How did naming storms come to be? Naming storms as they development over water, started by the late 19th century. By 1978, changing times and increased political pressure pushed the National Hurricane Center to request a change to the hurricane naming list. For example, the Atlantic hurricane list is compiled of named derived from English, Spanish and French cultures, due to the countries that surround the Atlantic basin.

Storms return to Central Florida as heat continues to pound the region
ORLANDO, Fla. Storms return to the Central Florida forecast, but the heat remains. A weak westerly steering pattern over the next few days will allow for a more typical summertime pattern to return, News 6 meteorologist Candace Campos said. After two dry days across Central Florida, rain chances return Tuesday to a more seasonal range of 40-50%.Storms are not expected to be severe, however, some could become strong, with frequent lightning, periods of heavy rain and wind gusts of 40-50 mph. Tropical Tracker:Besides a few tropical waves rolling off the west coast of Africa, there is not much happening out in the tropics. As of Tuesday morning, the National Hurricane Center is not expecting any tropical development within the next 48 hours.

Scorcher! Heat index to hit 106 in Central Florida as rain chances dip
ORLANDO, Fla. Its going to be Florida hot Monday as the chance of rain will be very low. The heat index in the Orlando area will reach 106 degrees, with the coverage of rain at 10-20%. A weak surface boundary remains over South Florida, keeping the moisture far to our south, News 6 meteorologist Candace Campos said. Rain chances increase to 30-50% Tuesday afternoon. By the latter part of the week, our onshore breeze will begin to tap into an area of tropical moisture from the southeast, Campos said.

Central Florida flirts with record heat; system near Carolinas could become tropical
ORLANDO, Fla. Stop me if youve heard this one before: the Central Florida forecast calls for a heat index near 105, with sea breeze storms passing through the region. A developing area of low pressure along the North Carolina coast, combined with a large high pressure across South Florida, will maintain a westerly steering flow across Central Florida on Thursday, News 6 meteorologist Candace Campos said. The offshore flow will be strong enough to at least delay the formation of the east coast sea breeze. Heavy rainfall will occur, but the steering flow should keep storms moving, so rain accumulations should remain low. Tracking the tropicsThe developing low off the coast of the Carolinas is also catching the eye of the National Hurricane Center.

ORLANDO, Fla. Feels like temperatures will soar to 105 degrees Wednesday before afternoon storms hit the region. Highs across the region will be in the mid- to low 90s, with heat index readings hovering from 100-105 degrees. A weak low pressure system over the Carolinas will maintain our west-to-southwest flow pattern across the area, Campos said. Deeper moisture will linger across Central Florida for the weekend, with rain chances of 60-70% expected each day. Tracking the tropicsAn area of low pressure over the Carolinas continue to produce a large area of disorganized showers and heavy rain.

Rinse, repeat: More storms in Orlando area; system could form near Florida
ORLANDO, Fla. Welcome to summer in Florida, where it rains almost every day. Tracking the tropicsAn area of low pressure sitting over central Georgia early Tuesday continues to produce a large area of showers and thunderstorms. This systems is expected to move toward the eastern seaboard later this week," Campos said. There is a 40% chance of tropical development of this system later this week, if it moves into the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Edouard was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone Monday as it moved over the North Atlantic away from the continental U.S.Edouard had become a tropical storm Sunday.
More storms to drench Central Florida as tropics start popping
ORLANDO, Fla. As more storms continue to drench Central Florida over the next few days, all eyes are on the tropics. Get ready for another round of widespread storms Monday afternoon in the Orlando area, News 6 meteorologist Candace Campos said. Models show the potential for some localized heavy rainfall amounts along the coastal counties where a few spots may reach 2-4 inches. For the rest of the week, storm coverage will remain near to above normal, with a few strong storms expected each day, especially toward the East Coast. Frequent lightning strikes, strong winds gusts up to 50 mph and locally heavy rainfall of 2-3 inches will continue to be the main threats.

Lower rain chances, humidity make for nice Friday in Central Florida
ORLANDO, Fla. It is a much nicer start to the day across Central Florida, all thanks to drier air moving into the area. For Friday, expect limited rain chances at 30%, with less humidity in place. Plenty of sunshine will allow highs to climb near 90 degrees in Orlando by the afternoon. The drier weather will not last long, however. By the weekend, winds will shift and tap into more tropical moisture from the south, increasing rain coverage to 50-60%, with highs staying in the low 90s.

Heat index to hit 105 in Central Florida before sea breeze storms strike
ORLANDO, Fla. The heat index will again soar into the triple digits Thursday across Central Florida and theres a good chance of afternoon storms. A slightly faster moving east coast sea breeze will push most of the stronger storms further west by late afternoon, News 6 meteorologist Candace Campos said. Expect a brief break from high humidity and rain chances Friday, with rain coverage down to 30%, Campos said. Drier air also means that heat index readings will be about 10 degrees lower than earlier this week.Higher rain chances return Saturday as moisture filters into the area. An increased moisture surge from the south will increase chances area-wide on Sunday, with rain coverage up to 70% and highs in the 80s.

Frigid now? It’s about to get even colder
Temperatures dipped into the 30s and 40s across most of Central Florida early Tuesday, with wind-chill readings about 5-7 degrees cooler. A freeze warning was in effect for Marion and Sumter counties until 9 a.m., as temperatures there dipped to the 30-degree range. “Temperature readings are expected to dip into the 30s and 40s, with wind-chill readings in the 20s in some spots. “We will begin to thaw out across Central Florida by Wednesday afternoon and into the rest of the week, as highs gradually warm into the 60s and 70s,” Campos said. “The warmer weather will not last long, as another front arrives by the end of the week, dropping the highs into the 60s by the weekend.”

Puerto Rico rocked by another 6.0 quake
Puerto Rico was once again struck by a powerful earthquake Saturday morning. Puerto Rico has been experiencing earthquakes since the beginning of the new year, and you, like many others, may be wondering why. According to News 6 meteorologist Candace Campos, the reason for the recent series of quakes all boils down to the science behind earthquakes and where Puerto Rico is located. Puerto Rico is located along active tectonic plates, which are like giant puzzle pieces that make up the earth’s crust. Along with that interaction, there is also the Puerto Rico Trench, which is caused by the North American Plate sinking underneath the Caribbean Plate.
