GLENDALE, Ariz. — (AP) — Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was carted off the field during the team's first offensive drive after a knee injury Monday night in Arizona's game against the New England Patriots. The fourth-year quarterback was flushed out of the pocket on the third play of the game and ran to his right. The Cardinals confirmed the knee injury and said the quarterback's return was questionable. Players from both teams surrounded Murray before he was carted off the field. The 36-year-old McCoy had a 1-1 record as the team's quarterback when Murray was out for two games last month.

SAN DIEGO — (AP) — Willson Contreras is going to St. Louis to replace Yadier Molina at catcher, agreeing to an $87.5 million, five-year contract with the Cardinals on Wednesday. The addition of Contreras fills a major void for St. Louis, which won the NL Central this season with a 93-69 record. Molina retired after spending his entire 19-year career with the Cardinals, making 10 All-Star teams and winning nine Gold Gloves. Contreras was one of the Chicago Cubs’ last holdovers from their 2016 World Series championship. The 30-year-old Contreras received a $19.65 million qualifying offer from Chicago, but he turned down the proposal.

Cincinnati has reportedly made a surprise hire to replace Luke Fickell. According to The Athletic, Louisville coach Scott Satterfield is set to be the Bearcats’ next coach. The Cardinals went 7-5 in 2022 and are set to play Cincinnati in the Fenway Bowl on Dec. 17. The move to hire Satterfield comes as the Fenway Bowl is Cincy’s last game as a member of the American Athletic Conference. The Bearcats are heading to the Big 12 in 2023.

The byproduct is a Louisville team that has made the wrong kind of history. An already struggling Cardinals defense got more bad news on Monday. Arizona safety Budda Baker has a high-ankle sprain that will sideline him for multiple weeks, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports. Baker injured his ankle during Sunday's 31-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Per Rapoport, the Cardinals hope that Baker can return within three weeks. The Cardinals are already thin a safety with verteran backup Charles Washington on injured reserve with a chest injury.

The Los Angeles Chargers and Atlanta Falcons are notorious for finding wildly creative ways to lose games. The Chargers eventually prevailed, 20-17 after a wild sequence featuring two fumbles that set up kicker Cameron Dicker for his second game-winning field goal of the season — for his second team. The Chargers were set up for a considerably less chaotic win while facing third-and-4 with 46 seconds remaining. Falcons defensive end Ta'Quon Graham scooped up the loose ball then rumbled 19 yards in an effort to set Atlanta up for its own potential game-winner. The gain ultimately set Dicker up for a 37-yard field-goal attempt to win the the game.

He’s averaging the most fantasy points among all backs in 0.5 PPR leagues this season despite reaching 15 carries in just one game (when he saw 16 rush attempts). Either way, Taylor is in a tough spot Sunday on the road against a New England defense allowing the second-fewest fantasy points to running backs this year. This week the Packers get a much different Lions defense yielding 5.1 YPC, 13 rushing touchdowns and the third-most fantasy points to running backs this season. Moore led the league in air yards last week and leads the NFL in air yardage share over the last month. He remains affordable in DFS this week facing a Bengals secondary dealing with multiple injuries, so Moore is undervalued.

Deandre Hopkins took a vicious blow to the head on Sunday during Sunday's Vikings-Cardinals game. He wants answers from the NFL after it didn't draw a penalty. There was no flag on the play, and Hopkins called for the NFL to provide an explanation after the game. This is on top of the obvious health concerns a hit like Smith's presents and the NFL wants to legislate out of the league. It's understandable the Hopkins wants an explanation.

The postseason begins with a field of 12 teams — up from last year's 10 — and includes a best-of-three format for the opening wild-card round. The expanded postseason has produced some spicy early postseason matchups. The division series will be best-of-five, while the league championship series and World Series will be best-of-seven. Six teams each from the American League and National League qualified for the postseason, including the three division winners in each league. The three wild-card teams in each league are the teams with the best record that didn't win their division.

It says something about the quality of the game, a 26-16 Arizona victory, that the pass was immediately negated by a penalty. Both teams came into the afternoon at 1-2, and until the fourth quarter, neither looked particularly threatening to anyone other than each other. The Cardinals had not held a lead in regulation this entire season, not until a go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter. That was part of a barrage of 23 straight Arizona second-half points, an onslaught that left Carolina reeling and unable to keep pace. By the time Mayfield watched the Cardinals bat down yet another pass late in the fourth quarter — their ninth on the day — the boos were raining down from the stands.

Pujols faced Oviedo for the first time and made the 24-year-old righty the 456th different pitcher he's homered against. Pujols hit his 22nd home run this season for the NL Central champion Cardinals. Pujols is fourth on the career home run list behind Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714).

PHOENIX — (AP) — Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols blasted two more homers, pushing his career total to 692 and helping St. Louis beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 16-7 on Saturday night. It was a vintage night for the 42-year-old Pujols, who continues to hit like a man at least a decade younger. He nearly hit a third homer, scorching a single off the base of the left field wall in the fifth. He capped his 4-for-4 night with a ground ball single through the left side of the infield in the seventh. The D-backs will pitch RHP Merrill Kelly (10-5, 2.81 ERA) while the Cardinals counter with LHP Jose Quintana (4-5, 3.38).

PHOENIX — (AP) — Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols hit two more home runs Saturday night, boosting his total to 692 and moving him past Stan Musial into second place on the career list for total bases. The 42-year-old Pujols connected for solo homers in the second and fourth innings against Arizona left-hander Madison Bumgarner. Pujols needs four more to tie Alex Rodriguez for the No. Pujols' first homer of the game gave him 6,137 total bases. Pujols has been on a roll over the past month, batting .386 with five homers over his past 16 games coming into Saturday.

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. — (AP) — Kyler Murray has made it no secret he enjoys video games, including the popular “Call of Duty” franchise. “Kyler knows the playbook better than anyone on this team,” Ertz said Tuesday, when the Cardinals reported for preseason camp. Murray finalized his five-year deal last week but it received renewed attention on Monday, when NFL Network first reported that Murray's new contract included an “independent study” clause. He's just glad the quarterback will remain in a Cardinals uniform for the foreseeable future. He added that the “independent study” mandate in Murray's contract shouldn't be a concern.

Cardinals rookie Brendan Donovan apologized Saturday night for tweets he sent with homophobic language as a teenager that surfaced during St. Louis' game against the Chicago Cubs.
