Bencic defeats Kasatkina in Adelaide International final
ADELAIDE, Australia — (AP) — Belinda Bencic beat Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 6-2 on Saturday to win the Adelaide International women's title, her sixth on the WTA Tour. The 13th-ranked Swiss player took barely an hour to beat the eighth-ranked Kasatkina. Bencic converted five of her seven break points and won almost double the amount of points than the Russian, who had been impressive in reaching the semifinals before both women had walkovers to advance to the final. “It’s our first title together, sure it’s not the last one, I feel like we’re just starting so thanks a lot,” Bencic said. The South Korean player was down 2-0 in the final set and had two break points against him before he recovered for the victory.

ADELAIDE, Australia — (AP) — Czech teenager Linda Noskova has produced one of the first major shocks of the 2023 season, beating 8th-ranked Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3 Monday in the opening round of the Adelaide International. Noskova took the first set comfortably in 46 minutes and broke to lead 4-3 in the second before Kasatkina broke back. She served for the match at 6-5 in but Kasatkina again fought back to take the set in a tiebreaker. Kasatkina had a tumultuous 2022 season during which she broke back into the top 10. “It’s been a lot of ups and downs but I think it was a really good season,” Noskova said.

Russia's highest-ranked women's tennis player, Daria Kasatkina, said in a video interview released Monday that she is dating a woman. The French Open semifinalist's comments come as the Russian parliament discusses tightening already stringent restrictions on public discussions of LGBTQ relationships. In the interview on YouTube with Russian blogger Vitya Kravchenko, Kasatkina said “yes" when asked if she has a girlfriend. Zabiiako, who won her Olympic medal with the Russian team in 2018, posted the same picture on Instagram, also with a heart. The 25-year-old Kasatkina is ranked 12th in the world and lives and trains in Spain, where the interview was filmed.
