A major project to raise a flood-prone Deltona road is moving closer to reality. The Deltona City Commission is set to vote on approving engineering, design and permitting work to elevate Elkcam Boulevard, a thoroughfare that residents say floods during even minor storms — and becomes impassable for weeks, sometimes months, after major ones.

Deltona city commissioners will vote on a proposal that could bring long-term relief to neighborhoods where flooding has been a recurring problem.

Frequent flooding has trapped residents in Deltona as roads remained closed for weeks and even months after major storms. Elkcam Boulevard in particular has been a focal point of these issues, especially after hurricanes Nicole and Ian.

Six people were seriously injured in a crash in Deltona, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
