Accused killer in former detention deputyโs death charged with conspiring to kill witness, Marion deputies say
An inmate suspected of killing a former Marion County corrections deputy is accused of conspiring to try and kill another inmate who is a witness in his case, according to the sheriffโs office.
Inmate attacks officer, crashes stolen vehicle in Lake County, deputies say
OKAHUMPKA, Fla. โ A Florida Department of Corrections inmate attacked a corrections officer along John Young Parkway Thursday and fled in a vehicle before crashing in Lake County, according to the Orange County Sheriffโs Office. The incident happened around 12:52 p.m. at North John Young Parkway and East Way Expressway when the inmate hit a corrections officer with a shovel and then stole his agency truck, according to the sheriffโs office. The inmate, identified as Dalton J. Ayers, was apprehended by law enforcement in Lake County. The corrections officer suffered minor injuries, deputies said, although the Florida Department of Corrections said the correctional officer was โbrutally attacked.โโThese types of escapes are extremely rare.
Seminole County inmate with COVID-19 dies, jail officials say
SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. โ An inmate at the Seminole County jail died Monday at a local hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 more than a week ago, according to the Seminole County Sheriffโs Office. The John E. Polk Correctional Facility, or JEPCF, inmate was seen by correctional facility medical staff on Aug. 19 for congestion and cold symptoms. Seminole County jail officials said they experienced an increase in coronavirus cases in mid-August and implemented additional cleaning and procedures to prevent the spread of the virus. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 95 out of a total of 2,057 inmates tested positive for COVID-19. The majority of the inmates who tested positive were asymptomatic and confined within two housing pods, officials said.
FDC investigates use of force incident after death of inmate at Lake Correctional Institution
LAKE COUNTY, Fla. โ The Florida Department of Corrections is investigating a use of force incident after the death of an inmate at the Lake Correctional Institution. FDC said the incident happened on Thursday and the inmate was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The inmate died from those injures on Friday, according to FDC. The name of the inmate has not been released at this time. The FDC Office of Inspector General will review the incident.
