The organization that puts on the Oscars said Thursday that 395 film industry professionals, 46% of whom are women and 39% from an underrepresented group, have been invited to join the 2021 class. If they accept, which most do, they will have voting privileges at next year’s Oscars. With this new class, the Academy said its total membership is now 33% women and 19% underrepresented groups. The Academy has said it remains committed to broadening its own lens over the next few years.

The dark comedy horror is “only a film," they say, but the story’s underlying messages of harmful hair weave and false beauty standards for Black women had a lasting effect. Ultimately, she discovers that her newly installed hair is possessed, taking over her body and causing harm to others. A weave is a popular method where hair wefts are sewn onto braided hair and styled in any manner. He said the writing process started with talking to some of his closest friends who are Black women.

LOS ANGELES (CNN) - Actress Laverne Cox on Sunday used her time on the 2019 Emmys red carpet to discuss an upcoming Supreme Court case that will decide whether federal employment law that bans discrimination based on sex does the same based on transgender status. The case, which will be heard on October 8, marks one of the most important cases of the upcoming Supreme Court term. Last month, the Justice Department reiterated to the Court that it does not believe that federal employment law that bans discrimination based on sex encompasses discrimination based on transgender status. News on the red carpet that the case would have implications beyond the LGBTQ community. Cox has frequently used her platform to advocate against LGBTQ discrimination.
