Luke List beats Zalatoris in Farmers playoff for first win

Zalatoris missed the chance to secure his own first career victory when he barely missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th, forcing a playoff. After List tapped in and Zalatoris missed his 13-foot birdie putt, List celebrated in the gloaming with his wife, Chloe, while he held their daughter, Ryann. Zalatoris and List finished regulation at 15-under 273, setting up the fourth playoff in the last 11 years at the Farmers. Zalatoris shot a nervy final-round 71, finishing with 12 straight pars.

HOUSTON — (AP) — Marc Leishman, Russell Henley, Talor Gooch and Luke List shared the lead Thursday in the suspended first round of the Houston Open, with List still on the course when darkness stopped play. Leishman, Henley and Gooch each finished at 5-under 65, while List had three holes left when play was called for the day. “We knew we weren’t going to finish so just trying to get as much as we could in,” List said. He's playing for the fifth time in the last six weeks. He's playing on a sponsor exemption.

Rain overnight and more during the third round left the TPC John Deere soft and prone to low scoring, and just about everyone took advantage. He led by one shot over Brandon Hagy, who is still looking for his first PGA Tour victory in his 93rd career start. Ten players were within three shots of the lead, all of them knowing what it would take in the final round — birdies. Even so, he still has a chance at his first PGA Tour title. Of the 20 players within five shots of the lead, seven have never won on tour.

List ran off seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch in the middle of his round, his only par on a 12-foot birdie chance on the 15th hole, and posted an 8-under 63. That gave him a one-shot lead over Sebastian Munoz going into the weekend at the TPC Deere Run. List is still searching for his first PGA Tour victory, though that wasn't front and center over the last month. “I was able to keep hitting the fairway, which out here is premium, and I was able to attack from the fairway,” List said. Among those making it to the weekend was Steve Stricker, the 54-year-old Ryder Cup captain and three-time John Deere Classic winner.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. In the second week of returning to golf, Nick Watney became the first player to test positive for COVID-19. Watney withdrew from the RBC Heritage on Friday, the PGA Tour said. Watney missed the cut last week in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial, the first tour event in three months after it shut down because of the pandemic. He traveled privately to South Carolina and tested negative upon arrival at Harbour Town. Before he arrived Friday for his afternoon tee time, he said he had symptoms consistent with the virus, consulted a doctor and tested positive.
