LOS ANGELES — (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers have traded the rights to Marc Gasol back to the Memphis Grizzlies, where the 36-year-old center spent his first 11 NBA seasons. The Lakers also sent a second-round pick in 2024 and cash to Memphis on Friday in exchange for the draft rights to Chinese big man Wang Zhelin. ESPN then reported the Grizzlies intend to waive Gasol, who plans to begin the new NBA season at home in Spain. The Lakers also weren't even certain Gasol wanted to return for another NBA season, prompting them to stock up on big men. Gasol made three All-Star teams during his career with the Grizzlies, who first acquired his rights from the Lakers in the trade sending his older brother, Pau, to the Lakers in November 2008.wftv.com
Goodbye to greats: Scola, Gasols reach the end at Olympics
That wasn't the only goodbye Tuesday on a historic day at the Olympics, where the curtain closed on an era of men's basketball. Scola still loves playing and was still doing it well, averaging 19.7 points through the preliminary round. Like Scola, he tied the men's basketball record by playing in his fifth Olympics. They were unbeaten after pool play in 2004 in Pau Gasol's first Olympics, before the Americans eliminated them in the quarterfinals. Instead, James has committed to play through his 20th NBA season with the Lakers, where he moved in 2018 after title-winning tenures in Cleveland and Miami. Los Angeles famously gave a two-year, $48.5 million extension to Bryant when he was 35 years old in November 2013. For instance, Davis could structure his deal to allow Los Angeles to pursue a third superstar in free agency next summer.
Celtics roll in Game 5, take 3-2 series lead on Raptors
