With no expectations, Wolff shares early lead at Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo Golf Matthew Wolff, left, shakes hands with his caddie, right, after his putt on the 18th green during the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament, Thursday, May 5, 2022, at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm golf club in Potomac, Md. Playing with freedom and joy, Wolff bogeyed the par-5 second hole at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm but was flawless from there, shooting an opening-round 65 on Thursday to share the early lead at the Wells Fargo Championship. “If I get in a spot where I'm in contention or if I'm by the lead, I'm sure going to feel nerves, but those are the nerves that I like to feel,” Wolff said. McCarthy, who was born in nearby Rockville and graduated from Georgetown Prep and the University of Virginia, is treating this one-and-done hometown Wells Fargo Championship more like a major. McIlroy, who won his third title at Quail Hollow last year, appears equally comfortable at hilly, tree-lined TPC Potomac.

Tiger Woods heads to Southern Hill for PGA practice round

The 18-hole practice round while walking came three weeks before the start of the PGA Championship being held May 19-22 at Southern Hills in Tulsa. A person with knowledge of his plans, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because only Woods can authorize such information, confirmed the practice round. Southern Hills last hosted a major in 2007, when Woods won the PGA Championship for the second straight year and fourth time overall. He has entered the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open at Brookline in June, though that was a formality as an exempt player. While tired after the Masters, Woods could only see himself getting better.

The Masters values tradition, but course change is constant

It started with heavy equipment — brought onto Augusta National to remove a massive tree from its former home near the 15th tee. While some traditions at Augusta National are hardly ever altered and some rules are downright absolute, the course itself has a long history of evolving with the times. Courses had to adjust with all of that, and most have, Augusta National certainly among them. Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley said one byproduct of that was the potential for perhaps a new pin placement than the usual spots on those greens. Put simply, even golfers who know — or knew — every nuance of Augusta National have had to re-learn some things on the fly for this week.
